Newhardt - Elias Dr.

Born March 7, 1818, Elias J. Newhard hailed from Ohio and married April 21, 1847 in Montgomery County, Indiana: wife Sarah Jane Frances. They had four children: George; Lydia; Phoebe and William all born here. Newhard gathered herbs, packed them in his large black satchel and would be gone for days dispensing his medicines to patients. This indicated his following the Thomsonian School of medical remedies. ALthough ahe and his family were found in the Smartsburg area 1850-70, but moved to Nodaway County (Maryville) Missouri about 1871. He died there Nov 17, 1879 and Sarah Jane Francis, his wife, died in 1884. Their stone in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville is in Sec 3, Row 11 and is plain and simple.
